Mapping of Waste Handling in Armenia

On July 24, 2019, the American University of Armenia and RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure (MTAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to implement a pilot project on creating database and map of waste generation and handling in all Marzes of Armenia excluding Yerevan municipality.

Specifically, the database will include geographic information on waste generation points and dumpsites. In effect, this pilot will produce a registry of existing dumpsites with their characteristics (including existing dumpsites as points or polygons, if provided by respondents). This pilot will also enable to build capacity for more efficient and optimized management and quality assurance for waste governance projects and assignments implemented by MTAI.

Project scope and outcomes
  • MTAI and AUA Acopian Center will develop an online map-based survey (using https://maptionnaire.com online resource subscription available before summer 2021 through the GAtES project) to collect information from the MTAI, Territorial administration and local government bodies.
  • MTAI will distribute the online map-based surveys among the territorial administration and local government bodies and oversee and assure the proper entry and accuracy of the data collection.
  • AUA Acopian Center will develop an online interactive map representing the collected information. The online map will be made publicly available on both MTAI and AUA Acopian Center websites.
  • In effect, database and map of waste generation and handling in all Marzes of Armenia (excluding Yerevan municipality) will be created.

Project duration
